The Boeing B-29 Super Fortress was the largest aircraft in the world when it was introduced in 1943. Large jets are so commonplace in our world today that many of us don’t give them a second look unless we’re waiting at the gate for our flight. At 141’3”, the wingspan of a B-29 is greater than that of a modern Boeing 737 MAX 9 (117’10”) or a 757-300 (125’).

The first test flight of a B-29 was September 21, 1942 – less than 40 years after the Wright Brothers achievement in flight. Even more interesting is this fact: The Wright’s first flight covered a distance of 120 feet. ONE HUNDRED TWENTY FEET! Less than the wingspan of a Boeing Super Fortress! That really adds perspective to their first flight.

This first picture is a favorite photo of my father and other AAF service members who were serving in Guam in 1945.

There seems to be 79 men on top of this aircraft with another 39 on the ground (118 total). I believe dad is second from left in the front row on the ground.

Referencing the cartoon panel, The B-29 measures 99′ from nose to tail. Long enough to suggest an operator assisted call was required for long-distance communication – at least in a “funny.”
