I was born at Fort Knox Kentucky, in 1949. Dad was then deployed to Korea for his first of 3 tours of duty there. When he returned from his 2nd tour, we were stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. Then he was sent to Scofield Barracks in Hawaii. We had planned to join him there, and got on the train to take us to San Francisco. For some reason, by the time our train arrived in Chicago, Mom decided she wasn’t going. So we returned to West Virginia to stay with our grandparents.

I’ll never know the reason for this change of events as both parents are deceased, but it sure makes me curious! We then were stationed at National Guard Armory in Athens, Ohio, where we stayed for 5 yrs, because Dad went back to Korea for his 3rd tour. Upon his return to US he went to Fort Riley, Kansas to OCS where he graduated Top of His Class. Then off to Lexington, Kentucky where he became an ROTC instructor for 2 years, at the UK. In September of 1965, we finally were sent to Europe, to Baumholder, Germany (LOVEDIT!). Then in the very middle of my Senior year at BAHS, Dad decides to retire!!! We returned to West Virginia on December 18, 1966. I started the remainder of my Senior year at PHS,(6months). At Baumholder there were approximately 30 Seniors in my class, at PHS I was one of 1,048!!! Talk about “Culture Shock”!!! I have remained in the same town since then, so neither one of my children have ever had to experience the uprooting we BRATS knew!!!
Like many of you, I learned to make friends fast, and faced the sadness of saying many goodbyes!!!
My Dad was laid to rest December 2, 1992, in Arlington National Cemetery.
Dad also served in the US Navy during WWII.
