Ft. Knox Basic Combat Training
June 8 to August 10, 1963

Our training Platoon was composed of half enlisted and half drafted men. I went on to serve a tour in Korea and Vietnam. I think about these guys often.” — Vern Nelson
Basic training at Fort Knox, Ky, September 1965, we were some of the first Vietnam call-up draftees. I just turned 20, and military life had an appeal to me, structured and predictable, with a good swift kick in the ass! This is before PC infected the military, our drill sergeants were all Korean war and WW2 war vets, tough talk and no apologies, I had a lot to learn about how the real world worked, and in some ways, basic provided that doorway. From here, I went to APG for aircraft armament repair school… that’s another story!
Hi all! I just wanted to introduce myself. I’m John (Jay) Reynolds and was at Ft. Knox in 3rd Grade in 1983 and left mid year during 6th grade. Fitzsimmons through mid year freshman. Leonardwood sophomore on. Senior picture class of 1993
