100-year-old Patrick Lloyd says he spent his time during World War II at Pearl Harbor, playing tenor saxophone in a Navy band. His records, however, indicate only that he was a “steward first class” with a cryptic notation about his service in a “recreation” program. This is where Patrick’s story intersects with an important part of our history: The all-Black Pearl Harbor Navy bands.
