FOG CAUSES BLOW

1945, The incident of a US bomber crashing into a building in 1945 was a crash event when a B-25 Mitchell bomber belonging to the US Army crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building in New York due to thick fog. At 09.40 am, Bomber B-25D Mitchell (flown by Lieutenant Colonel William F. Smith Jr.). Impact Location: 79th floor of the north side of the Empire State Building (which at the time was the tallest building in the world). Casualties: 14 people died (3 people in the plane and 11 people in the building). Impact and Unique Facts Damage: Caused a large hole measuring around 18 x 20 feet on the wall of the building as well as a large fire in the office area. Elevator Accident: One of the aircraft engines that fell broke the elevator cable. An elevator operator named Betty Lou Oliver survived a 75-story fall in an elevator, setting the record for surviving the highest free fall.
