✈️ A father and his 14-year-old son went out with a metal detector in a Danish field hoping to find “some old plates or something for Daniel to show in school” — instead, they uncovered the wreckage of a WWII Messerschmitt buried 16 feet deep, along with the remains of its pilot. A small diary and a watch found at the site, both bearing his initials, helped identify him as Hans Wunderlich, 19, from Neusorg, Bavaria, who crashed near Birkelse in October 1944 and had lain undiscovered for over 70 years. With no surviving next of kin — his parents and only sister have all since passed — Wunderlich may now be laid to rest in a war cemetery in Denmark.
